Pediatric ophthalmology is a subspecialty of medicine and surgery whose physicians are trained to perform all aspects of medical care for children’s eyes and visual systems. Their training includes medical school, internship, residency in ophthalmology, and subspecialty fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.
The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) describes pediatric ophthalmologists as, “Medical and Surgical Doctors (Eye MDs) who specialize in the eye problems of children.“
Pediatric ophthalmologists are qualified to perform complex eye surgery as well as to manage children’s eye problems using glasses and medications. Many ophthalmologists and other physicians refer pediatric patients to a pediatric ophthalmologist for examination and management of ocular problems due to children’s unique needs. In addition to children with obvious vision problems, children with head turns, head tilts, squinting of the eyes, or preferred head postures (torticollis) are typically referred to a pediatric ophthalmologist for evaluation.
At ABC Eyes, our pediatric ophthalmologist have specialized training and practice in examining children and caring for their eye problems. We focus on the development of the visual system and the various diseases that disrupt visual development in children.
Adults Too?
Straight eyes are not just for children. Adults with strabismus have multiple options to improve or correct the alignment of their eyes. Our pediatric ophthalmologists are board certified in ophthalmology and have years of experience treating adults with strabismus or other vision disorders.
