Commitment to Vision Research
Pediatric Ophthalmology and the Center for Adult Strabismus has had a long tradition of active involvement in scientific and clinical vision research in strabismus, strabismus surgery, amblyopia, binocular vision, pediatric cataract, retinopathy of prematurity, and vision screening. Research projects have ranged from independent scientific investigations to participation in large multi-center clinical trials. This has led to the publication of well over 100 articles in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and many more presentations at local, state, national and international conferences.
Long-standing collaborations with scientists and clinicians at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the Retina Foundation of the Southwest in Dallas as well as the national Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) continue to form a unique and rich opportunity for research endeavor in the field of pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus.
Current research projects include the long-term evaluation of treatment outcomes of pediatric cataract, the development of advanced surgical techniques for the treatment of complex strabismus problems, the evaluation of treatment outcomes and quality-of-life in adults with strabismus, cost-benefit analyses of treatment of strabismus and amblyopia, and active participation in national studies funded by the NIH (Amblyopia Treatment Studies and the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study).
About Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG)
PEDIG is a nationwide network of pediatric eye doctors who carry out important studies of eye diseases in children. This network includes about 100 clinical sites throughout the United States and Canada. The group conducts clinical trials evaluating a range of treatment options for eye diseases such as amblyopia, esotropia, nasolacrimal duct obstruction and myopia.
